It’s been a bit of a waiting game with my locking box. Waiting for things to dry, waiting for things to get fired, waiting for things to come out of the kiln. But, it finally feels like all the difficult parts are done! Unfortunately, I don’t have photos to show of how it looks now that it’s been baked once, but it came out of the bisque kiln relatively unscathed. Except for one or two small blips in the colored slip and a few broken pins, all of the pieces have come out wonderfully.
While all of this waiting was going on, I took the opportunity to practice more throwing on the wheel to help me decide for sure that it was something I wanted to do for the next project.
After confirming that I wanted to throw, planning what to make was next. I opted for the mugs since I might have a slight mug obsession. I had considered other projects (namely the mixed media one) so I wanted to somehow tie in the element of memory that was a part of that project. Had I chosen that project, I would have done some equine related since horses have been a integral part of my life (I’ve been riding since I was 7, my mom rode, my uncle breeds horses, my grandpa was a trainer; you get the idea. I am horse person).
And that is how we landed on making a set of five mugs, each showing a different gait of the Saddlebred breed which, conveniently, has the same number as gaits as I do mugs. Inspiration will be taken Eadweard Muybridge’s equine locomotion photos to show different moments of each gait as the mug is rotated. I’m very excited to get started on these mugs and hope to make something both aesthetic and functional.
